New facility enhances experience for tourists visiting the iconic Pancake Rocks and Blowholes Track.
Tourists to the famous Punakaiki site will now enjoy a richer experience thanks to a world-class visitor centre run by local iwi. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to provide high-quality experiences while protecting this special place and boosting the regional economy.
The centre, opened on 29 November 2024, was jointly funded by $28.10 million from the Provincial Growth Fund and $17.37 million from the Department of Conservation – Te Papa Atawhai. The project was delivered in close partnership with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae over several years.
Conservation Minister Tama Potaka said the Punangairi Visitor Experience Centre is a beautifully designed building that brings mana to the visitor experience and fits into the surrounding landscape. "It's home to a smart multi-media encounter, Paparoa Experience," he explained.
The centre aims to provide visitors with a richer experience while also protecting this special place and boosting the regional economy. Tourism to public conservation areas brings over $3 billion into New Zealand's economy each year, celebrates our natural and cultural heritage, and creates jobs in communities.
