Regional Development Minister Shane Jones announces significant upgrades for Hokitika Airport and key port facilities at Greymouth and Westport.
Regional Development Minister Shane Jones has welcomed a $15.3 million investment from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to upgrade Hokitika Airport, Greymouth Port, and Westport Port on New Zealand's West Coast. The funding will support the creation of 38 jobs during construction and enhance airport operational safety, reduce flight delays and cancellations, and minimize aircraft maintenance costs.
The upgrades aim to improve resilience and support economic growth in the region by facilitating trade and investment. Key port facilities at Greymouth and Westport are crucial for the local fishing industry and minerals sector, with the investments expected to drive expansion of mineral extraction and fisheries operations.
The funding complements a $101 million investment from Budget 2024 for flood resilience projects nationwide and is part of a broader effort by the Coalition Government to support regional development. Since 2018, over $244.6m in funding has been approved for West Coast projects through Kānoa – Regional Development & Commercial Services.
The upgrades are set to have a positive impact on the region's economic health and the country as a whole, with Minister Jones emphasizing the importance of good regional infrastructure in supporting the efficient movement of people and goods.
