Volunteer Firefighters Call for Better Support

Volunteer Firefighters Call for Better Support

Green Party stands with volunteers demanding equal ACC benefits.

The Green Party has expressed its support for a petition by volunteer firefighters calling on the Government to amend legislation providing them with the same Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) coverage and benefits as paid counterparts.

According to Green Party ACC spokesperson Benjamin Doyle, no one who risks their life for their community should suffer without support. Volunteer firefighters face similar risks to career firefighters, including cancer, asthma, cardiovascular diseases, and musculoskeletal issues. However, they may not be eligible for compensation related to work-induced mental health conditions.

The petition aims to change this by ensuring that volunteers are covered for long-term illnesses resulting from hazardous environments. The Green Party believes that amending ACC legislation is a step towards creating a more human-centred organisation providing comprehensive support for people in need.

Doyle emphasizes the importance of showing care and respect for volunteer firefighters who put their health and wellbeing on the line to keep communities safe. He urges the Government to consider the petition urgently, calling it "well past time" that volunteers receive the support they deserve.
