Dependent children of temporary visa holders face stricter health requirements.
The New Zealand government has announced changes to the immigration system, effective from 17 March. The move aims to ensure more consistency in health requirements for dependent children of people on temporary visas. Immigration Minister Erica Stanford stated that a recent surge in school enrolments among children of temporary migrants has put pressure on the already oversubscribed learning support system.
Under the new rules, dependent children will no longer be eligible for student and visitor visas if they have severe cognitive or development disorders requiring significant support. Parents or legal guardians must declare any medical conditions affecting their child's visa application. Those applying for a 12-month stay or more must also provide a full medical certificate.
The changes aim to align health requirements with those for resident visa applicants, providing greater transparency and fairness in the immigration system. Immigration Minister Stanford emphasized the need to balance creating opportunities for migrants while protecting New Zealanders' rights to work and thrive.
