Trade Minister Heads to Doha Talks

New Zealand's trade prospects with Gulf region.

Trade Minister Todd McClay will meet with all six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Trade Ministers in Doha this week. This is his seventh visit to the region this year, including two meetings with Saudi Arabia following reengagement at the WTO Ministerial Meeting in February. The GCC is a significant economic partner for New Zealand, with goods and services exports totaling $2.6 billion in the year to June 2024.

The discussions aim to strengthen New Zealand's trade relationships and meet its ambitious target of doubling exports by value within ten years. This goal is part of the government's plan to grow the economy, increase incomes for Kiwis, and create jobs. Mr McClay will also meet with the GCC Secretary General as part of his visit.

New Zealand's focus on expanding trade in the Gulf region highlights its importance as a key economic partner. The country's growing exports are expected to benefit from these discussions, which will help drive economic growth and development.
