Small mental health providers face continued restrictions from the Mental Health Innovation Fund despite a revised threshold.
Labour's mental health spokesperson Ingrid Leary stated that although the new $100,000 threshold is more accessible than its predecessor, it remains a significant barrier. The initial co-fund amount was reportedly determined arbitrarily and has led to excessive costs for small organizations. This includes the necessity of conducting expensive performance impact reports.
As a result, many community mental health organizations in rural areas will continue to be excluded from accessing crucial funding. Leary expressed concern that the Minister's priorities appear misaligned with addressing pressing mental health needs. Instead, resources are being allocated towards specific projects like Gumboot Friday and the Mental Health Innovation Fund. This has resulted in narrowed criteria for other groups seeking assistance.
Ingrid Leary urged the government to reassess its approach and ensure that resources reach those most in need.
