Start-ups Warned Against Economic Espionage

New security guidance for emerging tech sector.

The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service and the Government Communications Security Bureau's National Cyber Security Centre have published new advice to protect start-ups from economic espionage. According to Minister Judith Collins, innovative breakthroughs make New Zealand a target for state and criminal actors seeking commercial or military advantage.

The "Secure Innovation: Security Advice for Emerging Technology Companies" guidance has been released alongside similar advice from Five Eyes partners Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The move reflects an increased openness about the threats faced by security agencies and their partners.

New Zealand's technology sector is a significant exporter, with $10.7 billion of goods and services exported last year. Minister Collins emphasizes that security is not a constraint on innovation but rather essential for protecting intellectual property and increasing the value of products and services.
