Standardised Tool for Farm Emissions Measurement

Standardised Tool for Farm Emissions Measurement

Agriculture Minister Todd McClay announces a standardised method for measuring farm-level greenhouse gas emissions.

The New Zealand Government has introduced a science-based tool aimed at reducing complexity and ensuring farmers have access to trusted emission-measuring methods. This move comes in response to sector demands for transparency and reliability, with over 10 calculators currently available offering varying methods of estimation. The standardised methodology includes key features such as farm-specific inputs, an accessible design using readily available data, and ongoing updates to incorporate scientific advancements.

Agriculture Minister Todd McClay notes that New Zealand farmers are some of the world's most carbon-efficient food producers but require tools they can trust to effectively manage on-farm emissions. This initiative is part of a broader commitment by the Government to invest in emission-reducing technologies, with $400 million allocated over four years.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) website provides access to the methodology and more information. The Government aims to work closely with farmers to meet obligations while maintaining New Zealand's position as a leader in sustainable food production.
