SH58 Safety Upgrades Get Green Light

Transport Minister Chris Bishop has announced the NZ Transport Agency's approval for construction to begin on the final stage of State Highway 58 (SH58) safety improvements project in Wellington.

The project, which aims to create a safer and more reliable connection for approximately 19,000 vehicles using the corridor daily, will include two new roundabouts at Flightys Road and Murphys Road intersections, as well as other safety improvements. The work is expected to commence within months and be completed by 2027. Preparation is already underway.

According to Bishop, the project supports expected urban growth in the region and aligns with the National Land Transport Programme 2024-27's focus on delivering safe roading infrastructure that supports economic growth and productivity. He acknowledged the patience of those affected by the ongoing construction works while NZTA strives to balance road maintenance with traffic flow.

The final stage follows extensive safety upgrades between State Highway 2 and east of Moonshine Road, which began in 2019 and were completed last December.
