Labour is warning that a proposed Regulatory Standards Bill would give too much authority to the ACT Party and undermine democratic processes.
The Government has begun consulting on the bill over the Christmas period, sparking criticism from Labour regulation spokesperson Duncan Webb. He claims the legislation prioritizes property rights over environmental standards and limits Parliament's ability to make rules in the public interest.
Key features of the bill include giving priority to property rights and restricting government's right to regulate in areas such as building and environmental protection. The bill also fails to address community wellbeing, climate change, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, according to Webb.
The proposal would establish a "Rule-Czar," with ACT Party leader David Seymour holding significant influence over the legislative process. Critics argue this would limit other ministers' ability to operate effectively, as they would need to certify compliance with Seymour's demands before making rules or laws.
Submissions on the bill close on January 13, and Labour is urging citizens to have their say.
