The Government has launched a public consultation on its proposed Regulatory Standards Bill to improve quality of regulations.
Regulation Minister David Seymour announced that consultation is now open, with the aim of codifying principles of good regulatory practice and making regulators accountable to New Zealanders. The Bill seeks to bring discipline to regulation, similar to the Public Finance Act's oversight of public spending.
According to Mr Seymour, poor regulation is a key factor in New Zealand's low wages and productivity. The Regulatory Standards Board will assess complaints and challenges to regulations, issuing non-binding recommendations and reports. Consultation on the proposed Bill will remain open until January 13, 2025.
