New Zealand seafood exports forecast to reach $2.4 billion.
New Zealand's seafood sector is set to achieve record-breaking export figures, with a projected increase of 3% in revenue for the year to June 2025. Oceans and Fisheries Minister Shane Jones credits the sector's success to hard work, healthy demand, tight global supply, and high export prices. The forecast growth is notable, given the sector has navigated challenging weather conditions and geopolitical issues that have driven up production costs.
The Coalition Government is supporting the sector through various initiatives, including extending marine farm coastal permits by 20 years, cutting fishing levies, and creating an aquaculture strategy. The aquaculture strategy aims to triple sales revenue to $3 billion by 2035, with good progress being made so far.
Minister Jones expressed gratitude for the seafood sector's hard work and pledged continued support to ensure their success contributes to regional prosperity and the wider New Zealand economy. Forecasts were released in the latest Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries (SOPI) published by the Ministry for Primary Industries.
