Public Service Act Overhaul Unveiled

Public Service Act Overhaul Unveiled

The Government's bid to streamline the public sector.

Public Service Minister Judith Collins announced today that the Public Service Act 2020 will be revised as part of the Government's efforts to increase efficiency and accountability within the public service. The changes aim to clarify the role of chief executives, streamline their responsibilities, and improve performance management.

According to Ms Collins, the current Act has hindered the public service from performing its best work, ultimately affecting the country's progress on economic growth and other government priorities. She cited the significant increase in public sector employees over the past six years, yet a decline in key areas such as health, education, and crime.

The Public Service Amendment Bill will address these issues by:

- Clarifying the role of the public service

- Streamlining chief executive responsibilities

- Reinforcing merit-based appointments

- Improving performance management and reducing silos

- Better managing risk

The bill is expected to be introduced in July.
