Police Stats Show Promising Safety Shift

New Zealand's crime rates decline across key areas.

New Zealand has seen a significant shift in its law and order situation over the past year, with promising early results according to Police Minister Mark Mitchell. Key statistics show a reduction in victimisations by 3%, a 30% increase in foot patrols, and a decrease in ram raids by over 60%.

The Government's policing approach focuses on back-to-basics methods, protecting law-abiding citizens' rights, and preventing gang takeovers of towns and public spaces. Mitchell is pleased with the early results but acknowledges that more work needs to be done.

Statistics released show a decline in serious assaults (3%), aggravated robberies (11%), and gang membership growth slowing tenfold from last year's 10% increase to just 1%. The Government is working to address retail crime, which continues to be a challenge.

These results come after Mitchell set a 12-month target for visible change in public safety. He believes that the Government's social investment approach and restoration of a strong economy will play significant roles in achieving its goal of making New Zealand the safest country in the world.
