Pharmac Report Calls for Better Patient Engagement

Pharmac Report Calls for Better Patient Engagement

New framework aims to improve patient-centred approach.

The Associate Health Minister, David Seymour, has welcomed the publication of Pharmac's Consumer Engagement Workshop Report. The report recommends establishing a reference group to work with Pharmac's Board and management to reset the relationship between Pharmac and consumers/representatives.

According to Mr Seymour, this move reflects their commitment to a more adaptable and patient-centered approach. Historically, engagement with consumer and patient advocates has been unequal and inconsistent due to the lack of an existing framework for them to engage with Pharmac.

The report outlines several key areas for collaboration, including improving communications practices, streamlining the HTA application process, and developing a 'fast track' process for medical technologies already adopted overseas. It also recommends allocating resources for the secretariat costs of the reference group and its future workshops.

Mr Seymour hopes that the Board will take this opportunity to prioritize expanding opportunities and access for patients and their families by increasing access to more medicines. He emphasized that the Government is doing its part, with a significant increase in Pharmac's budget last year.

The implementation of these recommendations aims to build a world-class health system with better access to world-class medicines.
