The Kinleith Mill paper production closure has resulted in hundreds of jobs lost.
The Kinleith Mill's closure, which has seen 230 families affected, will have a significant impact on the local economy and community. According to Green Party spokesperson for Regional Development Scott Willis, this could have been avoided with more support from the government. "This is absolutely devastating for this community and especially for Tokoroa, the heart of the South Waikato," he said.
The closure has raised concerns about the government's commitment to regional development. Ministers Winston Peters, Shane Jones, and local MP Louise Upston had previously made promises to address the issue. However, Scott Willis believes that closing the paper machine does not solve the problem. Instead, he suggests that the government invest in sustainable energy markets and future industries.
The Green Party has proposed a Future Workforce Agency to upskill New Zealanders and coordinate industrial planning. Their Jobs for Nature plan aims to provide people with meaningful and stable work. However, Willis argues that rules need to be changed within the energy system to prevent further job losses and issues of supply.
