PM Luxon Heads to APEC Summit

New Zealand Prime Minister departs for Peru.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is set to attend the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting in Lima, Peru, from 15-16 November. The meeting will bring together leaders of the 21-member economies to discuss regional economic policy and address global challenges.

The APEC region accounts for around 40% of the world's population and over 60% of global GDP. New Zealand exported $74.2 billion in goods and services to APEC economies in the year to June 2024. Mr Luxon emphasized that removing economic barriers in the Asia-Pacific is critical to New Zealand's national interests, given one in four Kiwi jobs depend on trade.

During his trip, Prime Minister Luxon will meet bilaterally with other leaders, including those from some of the world's largest economies, to advance New Zealand's interests. The Ministers of Foreign Affairs Winston Peters and Trade Todd McClay will also attend the APEC Ministerial Meeting in Peru from November 13-14.

The APEC Summit provides a platform for Mr Luxon to discuss regional economic policy and navigate global challenges alongside his counterparts. He is scheduled to return to New Zealand on November 18.
