Thirteen young people stormed Oranga Tamariki residence.
The 13 youths gained access to the roof of Korowai Manaaki residence in Auckland last night, but all are now down. Children's Minister Karen Chhour has stated that there will be consequences for their actions.
No demands were made during the incident and no one left the property, posing no public safety risk. The facility held firm against the rooftop breach, a first of its kind this year.
This breach comes after significant changes to Oranga Tamariki's youth justice residences, aimed at improving safety and security. Staff recruitment and training have been enhanced since a review was released last year by former Police Commissioner Mike Bush.
The incident has triggered an investigation into how it happened and what measures can be taken to prevent future breaches.
