Government restores open work rights for partners of high-skilled migrants.
The New Zealand Government has announced the return of open work rights for partners of Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) holders from 2 December. Immigration Minister Erica Stanford stated that this change is part of the government's efforts to grow the economy and attract skilled workers. Partners of AEWV holders working in higher-skilled roles earning at least 80 percent of the median wage will be eligible, as well as those on a pathway to residence.
This decision delivers on the coalition commitment between National and ACT parties to make it easier for family members of visa holders to work in New Zealand. The previous government's restriction on open work rights had caused significant distress within migrant communities. Minister Stanford emphasized that the goal is to create opportunities for people to contribute meaningfully while protecting the rights of New Zealand citizens.
The changes are expected to support sectors facing skills shortages, such as healthcare and education. People already holding work visas with specific employment permissions will be able to apply for a variation in their visa conditions.
