New Zealand Maths Education Under Spotlight

Government's maths transformation plan backed by international data.

Education Minister Erica Stanford has cited new international data in support of the Government's plan to transform maths education in New Zealand. The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2023 results show no change in average maths achievement, but an improved average score for science.

The "Make it Count" Action Plan aims to provide teachers with tools to boost student success. From next year, schools will benefit from a new knowledge-rich curriculum, four professional development training days, and resources including maths workbooks and online support for 450,000 students. A maths acceleration programme for disadvantaged students will also be trialled.

However, the report highlights a significant gap in average achievement between disadvantaged and affluent schools, which is worsening. The Government has pledged to close this equity gap, with a target of 80% of Year 8 students achieving expected curriculum levels by 2030. To support teachers, the science learning area will be refreshed for consultation in 2025.

The TIMSS results underscore the importance of lifting student achievement. While encouraging improvements have been made in science scores, maths achievement remains below international standards.
