New Zealand Invests $20m in Pacific Disaster Relief

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announces funding boost for Pacific Resilience Facility.

New Zealand has pledged $20 million to support disaster preparedness and climate resilience in the Pacific Islands region. The contribution, announced by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters while in Samoa, will be channeled through the Pacific Resilience Facility.

According to Mr Luxon, the Pacific Islands face severe challenges from natural disasters and climate change impacts, prompting New Zealand's commitment to help address these issues. He stated that joining other countries in supporting the Pacific Resilience Facility will encourage investment in preparedness for natural disasters and resilience to climate change effects.

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters emphasized the importance of accessible climate finance for Pacific Island countries, saying the facility will ensure practical benefits for community-level projects. The announcement comes ahead of the COP29 meeting next month, where a new global climate finance goal is set to be agreed upon.
