New Zealand Assists Vanuatu After Devastating Earthquake

New Zealand provides aid following devastating earthquake.

Foreign Minister Winston Peters announces assistance for Vanuatu.

Foreign Minister Winston Peters stated that New Zealand is supporting its Pacific family member, Vanuatu, after yesterday's earthquake. "Our thoughts are with the people of Vanuatu," he said. The country will send a military surveillance plane to assess damage and an urban search and rescue team once the airport reopens. Relief supplies, medical officials, consular support, and humanitarian aid will also be provided.

New Zealand is working closely with Australia and France to offer further assistance as requested by Vanuatu. However, communication difficulties due to the earthquake mean it may take time to determine specific needs in the coming days. New Zealanders in Vanuatu requiring consular assistance are advised to contact +64 99 20 20 20 or follow local guidance.

Peters said that New Zealand will continue to assess how best to assist its citizens in Vanuatu and provide support as needed. The operation aims to help the people of Vanuatu during this time of acute need.
