New Seafood Factory Opens in Porirua

A major new development for New Zealand's seafood industry.

The Wellington Kaimoana Hub, a joint venture between Moana New Zealand and Port Nicholson Fisheries, was formally opened by Oceans and Fisheries Minister Shane Jones on 11 December 2024. The $45 million facility is expected to bring export revenue, jobs, and opportunities for the Porirua community.

According to Minister Jones, the seafood sector is crucial to New Zealand's economy, generating billions of dollars in export revenue annually. The Wellington Kaimoana Hub is a purpose-built, 4500m² facility that will meet growing demand for high-quality New Zealand kaimoana. With approximately 9000 people employed in the wild capture fishing industry and seafood processing nationwide, the hub's opening is seen as a significant boost to the sector.

Minister Jones expressed his commitment to facilitating the growth of New Zealand's seafood industry, highlighting its sustainability and high quality as key factors driving demand worldwide. The new facility is expected to contribute positively to the local community and support the country's economic engine.
