New legislation aimed at combating illegal fishing in the high seas has been passed by Parliament.
The Fisheries (International Fishing and Other Matters) Amendment Bill introduces stronger powers to investigate and prosecute suspected illegal fishing outside New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone. According to Oceans and Fisheries Minister Shane Jones, this is a necessary measure to prevent the undercutting of legitimate operators, distortion of markets, and negative impacts on sustainability.
Key changes in the new law include improved regulation of New Zealand vessels fishing abroad, enhanced ability to combat IUU (Illegal Unreported and Unregulated) fishing by both domestic and foreign vessels, clarification of international fishing permits, and more efficient action against fisheries violations. These reforms aim to protect the livelihoods of fishing communities throughout New Zealand and the Pacific while ensuring sustainable fishery practices.
The law is expected to improve the management of fisheries in the region and promote a level playing field for legitimate operators.
