New Gas Well Unlocks Mature Field Potential

The new Pohokura gas well delivers 4 petajoules per annum.

Resources Minister Shane Jones has hailed the Pohokura Onshore Well Number 5 (POW-05) as a technical feat that demonstrates the potential for further development of mature fields in New Zealand. The well, operated by OMV and Todd Energy, is expected to make a significant contribution to energy security this winter by delivering about 4 petajoules of gas per annum into New Zealand's energy network.

The well, which has become one of New Zealand's longest at 3km deep and 8km lateral from onshore, was turned on recently. According to Mr Jones, the achievement is a credit to OMV's extensive experience and expertise in working with New Zealand's geology.

The new gas supply from POW-05 comes as part of broader efforts by the Government to address energy security concerns following last winter's shortages. The Government has approved measures to increase energy production and has signaled its intent to reinvigorate investment in petroleum exploration through the Crown Minerals Amendment Bill.

Positive signs are also being seen elsewhere in the sector, with Greymouth Petroleum reporting a significant gas find in the Turangi field and planning further drilling campaigns for 2025.
