New Fund Aims to Reduce Alcohol Harm

Mental health minister addresses local initiatives.

Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey announced the Community Action Fund today, which will focus on reducing alcohol-related harm in New Zealand's communities through early prevention and intervention. The fund aims to support community-led services, innovative projects, and partnerships that target high-needs groups most impacted by alcohol harm. Initiatives may include education for young people, alternative social spaces, and workshops to improve capability among service providers.

The fund will prioritize local action and sustainable partnerships, building on existing efforts in health and education. Community-based organisations have already delivered positive results through early intervention projects targeting high-risk youth. The first funding round of $1 million has been allocated, with hopes for a second round later this year.
