New Campaign Aims for Alcohol-Free Pregnancies

A public health initiative aims to prevent fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Health Minister Dr Shane Reti has launched a new campaign, Nurture the Future Within, in an effort to reduce the prevalence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) in New Zealand. FASD is a leading cause of preventable intellectual and neurodevelopmental disorders, causing lifelong physical, behavioral, learning, and mental health problems.

According to Dr Reti, approximately three to five Kiwi children are born with FASD every day. The campaign aims to promote alcohol-free pregnancies by highlighting the importance of avoiding any level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. As part of a broader work programme, eight new initiatives have been announced this year, totaling $6.85 million in funding.

The campaign also includes education and support for individuals and families affected by FASD. A community-led pilot programme has shown positive results, bringing together over 215 families, health professionals, and community leaders to provide education, support, and access to services. The goal of the initiative is to make New Zealand a place where the prevalence of FASD is well understood, individuals and families with FASD are well supported, and women can have alcohol-free pregnancies.
