Funding to upgrade significant national places.
The Government has allocated $20.3 million to enhance two nationally important locations in New Zealand. Regional Development Minister Shane Jones and Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka announced the funding, which will be used through the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF).
The Rātana Pā near Whanganui will receive a grant of $10.1m towards infrastructure upgrades, including improvements to two key buildings - Te Manuao and Orakeinui. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds in Northland will get a total of $10.2m for building repairs and upgrades.
The facilities at Rātana Pā have been deteriorating over time, relying on volunteer resources, donations, and small income from annual events to maintain them. Without the necessary upgrades, some buildings would need to be closed, potentially disrupting annual celebrations and church events.
More than 160,000 people visit Waitangi Treaty Grounds each year, making it a significant site for all New Zealanders. The upgrades will ensure safer conditions for visitors and residents and preserve national history. Both sites are vital components of the country's story, and maintaining them is essential to their continued relevance.
The funding is part of a larger effort by the RIF to support regional development projects across New Zealand. In September, the Government provided $5.8 million to improve water infrastructure at Parihaka in Taranaki.
