Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters concludes visit.
Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters has wrapped up a week-long trip to New York and Washington DC, where he met with US officials to discuss the countries' partnership in the Indo-Pacific region. Mr Peters described his visit as "seriously valuable" and praised the US for being an indispensable partner for New Zealand.
During his meetings in Washington DC, Mr Peters met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and other Administration representatives. The two countries agreed to continue working together towards a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. They also discussed areas of common interest, including Pacific Islands stability and trade.
Prior to his visit to Washington DC, Mr Peters engaged with UN officials in New York, highlighting the importance of international cooperation for small countries like New Zealand. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the need to reform the UN system to promote security and prosperity.
Mr Peters' visit marks a significant step towards strengthening ties between NZ and the US, but he acknowledged that this is just the beginning. Further discussions will take place with Cabinet colleagues in New Zealand to consider constructive cooperation between the two countries.
