Minister Heads to Brisbane for Trade Talks

Pacific trade deal gets underway.

The Minister of State for Trade, Nicola Grigg, has arrived in Brisbane to attend the PACER Plus Ministers Meeting. The agreement aims to drive employment and economic growth in the Pacific Region through closer economic relations.

Ms Grigg highlighted the importance of trade in improving living standards and the Government's commitment to supporting Pacific Island countries. She noted that PACER Plus is the largest and most comprehensive trade agreement in the region, helping both large and small businesses grow through e-commerce, enhanced regulatory cooperation, streamlined customs processes, and provisions on investment.

The meeting marks the first in-person gathering for PACER Plus Ministers since the Agreement entered into force in 2020. The discussion will focus on stockpiling achievements to date and determining priorities for the next five years. Ms Grigg emphasized that while PACER Plus is a trade agreement, it also represents the bonds between Pacific nations as neighbours, partners, and family.

There are currently 10 parties to the agreement, with remaining Pacific Island Forum members being encouraged to join in due course.
