Labour's open letter gains over 15,000 signatures.
A last-ditch effort by Labour to stop the Treaty Principles Bill has seen over 15,000 people sign an open letter to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. The letter calls on National and ACT to vote against the bill, which has been described as "divisive", "pernicious nonsense" and "dangerous".
Labour Leader Chris Hipkins said the bill was a waste of taxpayers' money and that Luxon had shown weakness by allowing ACT to lead the charge. Former National Minister Chris Finlayson also spoke out against the bill, calling it an attempt to impose new terms on Māori without their consent.
Luxon himself has stated he does not like the bill, but it remains unclear whether National will vote against it. The open letter urges Luxon to take a stand and protect Te Tiriti o Waitangi, New Zealand's founding document.
