Legislation Expands Anzac Day Commemorations

New Zealand's Parliament has passed a bill to officially recognise more veterans' service, broadening the scope of Anzac Day commemorations.

The Anzac Day Act Amendment Bill aims to include those who served in conflicts after 1966 and non-military personnel, such as the Home Guard and Merchant Navy. The legislation will also acknowledge troops from India and France for their role in the Gallipoli landing. Veterans Minister Chris Penk and Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Paul Goldsmith say the change is long overdue, honouring those who have made significant contributions to New Zealand's history.

The bill is expected to pass by 2026, marking a shift towards greater inclusivity in official Anzac Day ceremonies. The move reflects an evolving understanding of the significance of Anzac Day, which has grown beyond its origins as a commemoration of World War I and II veterans. As Minister Goldsmith notes, "every New Zealander who has served in war and war-like conflicts deserves official recognition and honour."
