Labour Proposes JP Modernisation Bill

Labour Proposes JP Modernisation Bill

Aims to improve access and quality of justice services.

The New Zealand Labour Party has introduced a bill to modernize the role of Justices of the Peace (JP). Labour MP Jenny Salesa stated that JPs are essential in their communities, emphasizing the need for adequate resources and support. The proposed changes aim to ensure consistent, high-quality, and timely JP services across the country.

Key provisions of the bill include reappointing JPs every five years, requiring them to join a national association, undergo annual training, and perform duties for at least 12 individuals per registration year. Existing JPs will have a four-year grace period to adapt to these new requirements.

The Labour Party aims to support JP recruitment, retention, and professional development while respecting their voluntary nature. The proposed legislation reflects a balanced approach to modernizing the JP system, prioritizing accountability, consistency, and quality in services.

This bill is set to enter the ballot, with the goal of improving access to justice for all New Zealanders. The changes are expected to benefit individuals who rely on these services, particularly those handling legal documents for the first time or requiring extra support.
