Labour is calling for an immediate end to police referrals to Destiny Church-affiliated programmes Man Up and Legacy.
The Labour Party has expressed concerns that offenders referred to these groups may be recruited into a harmful organisation, citing incidents of violence against the Rainbow community. In response to written parliamentary questions, Police Minister Mark Mitchell confirmed that 20 offenders were referred to Man Up and Legacy in the last year since the two groups were approved as "wellness providers".
Labour MP Phil Twyford questioned the Minister's decision, stating that there is no evidence Destiny programmes have a positive effect on offenders. He also raised concerns about the potential recruitment of new members through police referrals. The West Auckland Police are currently investigating Destiny Church's conduct at Te Atatū Peninsula Library.
"This is a serious issue that requires immediate attention," said Labour rainbow community spokesperson Shanan Halbert. "The Rainbow community has felt under attack, with over 100 incidents of hate reported monthly under the current government."
