The Labour Party supports sanctions against Israel's occupation of Palestinian Territories.
New Zealand's opposition party has announced its backing for Chloe Swarbrick's member's bill that would allow sanctions against Israel. The move follows a UN General Assembly vote, in which the New Zealand Government voted in favour of a resolution calling for sanctions on Israel. This comes after years of Labour pressing the Government to take stronger action against Israel's actions, including intervening in an International Court case and ending government procurement from companies operating in occupied territories.
Labour associate foreign affairs spokesperson Phil Twyford said that the party has long recognised Israel's occupation as illegal, dating back to 2016 when a National-led government co-sponsored a Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements. "It is time to support the international rule of law and demonstrate the international community will not ignore Israel's forced displacement of Palestinians," Twyford stated.
The Labour Party aims to stand by its values of upholding international law, while also taking action against human rights abuses in the region.
