Justice Simon Moore KC Leads Electoral Commission

New head appointed as chair of the Electoral Commission.

The New Zealand government has officially appointed Justice Simon Moore KC as the new chair of the Electoral Commission, following a House agreement on October 24, 2024. According to Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith, Justice Moore brings a high level of legal expertise and decision-making ability, along with strategic planning skills and personal integrity.

Justice Moore's background in law spans over four decades, having begun his career as a staff solicitor at Meredith Connell in 1982. He later became a partner and chairman of partners before being appointed to the High Court Bench in 2014. His appointment is for a five-year term, set to commence on November 18, 2024.

The outgoing chair, Dame Marie Shroff, has been thanked for her years of service to the Commission and public service. Justice Moore's experience and qualifications are expected to provide stability and direction to the Electoral Commission in his new role.
