Jobseeker Numbers Show Cautious Improvement

More than 23,000 job seekers found work in the March quarter.

The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) has released quarterly benefit numbers showing an increase in job seekers finding employment. According to statistics, more than 23,000 clients receiving a main benefit found work in the March 2025 quarter – an increase of 2,421 people or 11.6 percent compared to the same period last year.

The number of people on benefit has decreased consecutively for three months in a row from January to March 2025, with Jobseeker Support numbers reducing by almost 3,500 people from December 2024 to March 2025. Social Development and Employment Minister Louise Upston attributes this progress to the heightened focus on employment by MSD frontline staff.

To support job seekers, the government has introduced new initiatives, including a phone-based employment case management service for young beneficiaries and increased community job coaching opportunities. The Relocate for Work Support payment will also help people move to take up sustainable employment. According to Minister Upston, these interventions are making a positive difference in helping job seekers find work and break the cycle of inter-generational welfare dependence.

While acknowledging that there is more work to be done, Minister Upston remains cautiously optimistic about the current trends. The government will continue to drive for economic growth and job creation in a challenging global environment.
