International Student Enrolments Surge in NZ

New Zealand's international student numbers rise 24%.

Tertiary Education and Skills Minister Penny Simmonds has reported a significant boost in international student enrolments, with a year-on-year increase of 24 per cent. According to Ms Simmonds, the sector rebounded strongly between January and August 2024, with 73,535 new enrolments recorded.

This growth is attributed to New Zealand's reputation for high-quality education, which attracts students from around the globe. The increased numbers are not only beneficial to local businesses but also contribute significantly to jobs and regional development nationwide.

Regional gains have been significant, with Gisborne experiencing a remarkable 126 per cent increase in international student enrolments. Other regions that have seen notable growth include Marlborough (45 per cent), Hawke's Bay (28 per cent), and Waikato (26 per cent). Universities and schools have driven this growth, with universities enrolling 31,345 students – a 14 per cent increase – and schools rising by 33 per cent to 16,815 students.

The diversity of source markets has also strengthened the education sector, with notable increases from countries such as the US, Thailand, Germany, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines. Every funded part of the sector has seen growth this year, reflecting the resilience and adaptability of New Zealand's education providers.

With historical trends indicating further enrolment increases before the end of the year, these results are considered positive for the education providers in New Zealand.
