Green Party Welcomes Pipeline Work Pause

The Green Party has expressed support for a pause in sewerage pipeline works near Lake Rotokākahi.

The proposed pathway of the pipeline past the sacred lake had raised concerns about environmental damage and desecration of the wāhi tapu. The case is currently before the Environment Court, and the party believes it is only just that works be paused until a ruling is given.

According to Green Party spokesperson for Māori Development Hūhana Lyndon, mana whenua have been protecting their wāhi tapu for months, inspired by their love and respect for their ancestors' land. The outpouring of support from across the country demonstrates Aotearoa's willingness to stand up against the use and abuse of Māori land without proper consultation.

Hūhana Lyndon calls on the Rotorua Lakes Council to work collaboratively with Tūhourangi and Ngāti Tumatawera, acknowledging that Te Tiriti o Waitangi asks for a path forward based on partnership and mutual respect. The Green Party continues to support the assertion of tino rangatiratanga by these iwi.
