Green Party Calls for Israeli Sanctions

The Green Party welcomes a provisional ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, but reiterates its call for an end to the occupation of Palestine.

In a statement, Green Party spokesperson for Foreign Affairs Teanau Tuiono says the party welcomes signs of a meaningful ceasefire. However, he emphasizes that lasting peace can only be achieved through efforts to establish justice and self-determination for Palestinians. Tuiono points out that New Zealand has a role to play in this process, citing the party's previous call for sanctions against Israel.

The Green Party is advocating for several measures, including divesting public funds from Israeli settlements, recognizing the State of Palestine, and joining South Africa's genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. The party also suggests increasing aid to Palestine and supporting the reconstruction of Gaza as determined by Palestinians. Tuiono highlights that the international community has failed to uphold international law in the face of Israel's brutal occupation, leaving countries like New Zealand with a responsibility to rebuild trust in the system.

Teanau Tuiono says there is still much work to be done to secure lasting peace and justice for Palestinians.
