Government sets path for net zero by 2044.
The Government has released its second Emissions Reduction Plan, outlining a strategy to reduce New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions while supporting economic growth. Climate Change Minister Simon Watts says the plan is designed to keep the country on track to meet its climate change targets.
According to Mr Watts, the plan sets out a path for achieving net zero emissions as early as 2044, with targeted actions in key sectors such as agriculture, transport, energy, and waste. Key policies aimed at reducing emissions include enabling more renewable energy projects, introducing agricultural emissions pricing, and incentivizing the uptake of new technologies.
The Government has also incorporated feedback from private sector companies, which highlighted their ongoing efforts to drive meaningful change across various industries. The plan acknowledges the significant progress already made in reducing emissions and showcases areas for further focus.
Current projections indicate that New Zealand is on track to meet its first emissions budget, even with changes to policy. The Government will continue to collaborate with businesses to achieve its goals of unlocking renewable energy, fostering innovation, and leveraging nature-based solutions to reduce emissions.
