Government Taps Private Sector for Tree Planting

Cabinet agrees to explore partnerships to plant trees on Crown land.

The New Zealand Government has announced plans to partner with the private sector to plant trees on low-value Crown land, as part of efforts to support climate change targets and create jobs. The move is aimed at reducing net emissions while delivering benefits to local communities.

Climate Change Minister Simon Watts said that nature-based solutions are a key part of the Government's climate strategy, which includes achieving Net Zero by 2050. The partnerships will allow for cost-effective emission reduction while leveraging New Zealand's natural assets for economic growth.

Forestry Minister Todd McClay emphasized the importance of forestry in driving economic growth and creating jobs in regions. Conservation Minister Tama Potaka highlighted the potential benefits to biodiversity and water quality, with a focus on upholding commitments related to Treaty of Waitangi settlement obligations.

The Government will release a request for information (RFI) on December 18, seeking input from potential partners and stakeholders. The RFI will outline conditions under which partnerships can be established and identify suitable land for the initiative.
