Schools should stay open for instruction, Government says.
The New Zealand Government has urged the Post Primary Teachers' Association (PPTA) to prioritize student learning after scheduling paid union meetings during school hours. Education Minister Ms Stanford said that between 9am and 3pm, parents expect their children to be at school learning. However, some schools have closed for instruction due to PPTA's decision.
According to the Education (When State Schools Must Be Open and Closed) Regulations 2024, paid union meetings must be carried out lawfully, and schools should remain open for instruction during these meetings. The Ministry of Education has taken action to ensure parents' expectations are met.
Education Minister Ms Stanford emphasized that with only 45% of students achieving the NCEA co-requisite standard for maths and 58% in reading, every opportunity counts for students to thrive. She expects the PPTA to reconsider their arrangements and put students first. National's Education spokesperson Mr Seymour also criticized the PPTA, stating they are more focused on ideology than learning.
The Government is committed to increasing student attendance, raising achievement, and providing choice to students, parents, and educators. Unions have been encouraged to prioritize student education and avoid disrupting their learning time.
