Government Reinstates Livestock Export Trade

Reopening trade for economic benefits, animal welfare.

The New Zealand Government has announced its intention to reinstate the trade of livestock exports by sea, with a focus on maintaining high standards of animal welfare. Associate Minister of Agriculture Andrew Hoggard stated that legislation changes will be introduced to enhance oversight and strengthen requirements for exporters.

According to Minister Hoggard, the amendments to the Animal Welfare Act 1999 aim to ensure exporters effectively manage animal welfare outcomes throughout the supply chain. The Government plans to engage with industry experts and key stakeholders to inform decisions on regulations and standards.

The reinstatement of livestock exports is expected to provide additional economic benefits for farmers, rural communities, and New Zealand's economy as a whole. The trade was worth $374 million in 2022 and supports food security goals for trading partners. However, the Government has emphasized that animal welfare will remain a top priority, with targeted engagement on technical details scheduled for November and December. A discussion document is set to be released next year, allowing the public to comment on legislative proposals when they are considered by Parliament in 2025.
