The Green Party strongly opposes the decision.
The Green Party has expressed its deep concern over the Government's plan to disestablish Resource Teachers of Māori (RTM) roles, which they believe will undermine kaupapa Māori education. According to Green Party spokesperson Benjamin Doyle, this move is a direct attack on the right of tamariki Māori to access quality education that reflects their identity and whakapapa.
The consultation to disestablish these highly specialised kaiako roles would undermine the value they bring in providing support and guidance for students, whānau, and kura. The Green Party is calling on the Government to instead commit to properly resourcing kaupapa Māori education, allowing all children to thrive. Benjamin Doyle emphasizes that this move directly contradicts the Prime Minister's promise to uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi as a foundational document of Aotearoa.
The opposition party is standing with educators and communities fighting to protect Māori education, highlighting their commitment to seeing te reo Māori and te ao Māori flourish in New Zealand. The Green Party urges the Government to reconsider its decision, prioritising the future of kaupapa Māori education.
