New Zealand residents on a benefit can now receive financial assistance to relocate for work.
The Relocate for Work Support payment will be available from 31 March, targeting individuals who cannot find employment in their current location but have secured a job elsewhere. Minister for Social Development and Employment Louise Upston aims to remove barriers for job seekers by providing travel costs and support to shift possessions.
The new initiative replaces the $5k to Work grant, initially introduced after the Christchurch earthquakes as '3k to Christchurch'. According to Upston, this is another practical way to help New Zealanders transition from welfare to employment.
The goal of Relocate for Work Support is to help people back into the workforce and achieve independence. With job opportunities available across the country, the government hopes to provide a necessary boost for those struggling to find work in their current location.
