Government Funds Helicopter Replacement

Government Funds Helicopter Replacement

The Government invests in new air ambulances.

The Government has announced a significant investment of $14.7 million to replace some of New Zealand's ageing air ambulance helicopters. Eight new helicopters, including both brand-new and second-hand models, will be purchased or leased to enhance the country's emergency medical services. The upgraded fleet is expected to provide improved safety, more reliable service, and better capacity for responding in bad weather conditions.

The funding, shared between Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora ($8.2 million) and ACC ($6.5 million), will enable air ambulance helicopter service providers to upgrade their fleets with newer aircraft. The investment comes as the use of air ambulances has increased by 21 percent over the past three years.

According to Associate Health Minister Casey Costello, the replacement helicopters will be deployed in parts of the country where they are most needed, ensuring that patients receive timely medical care. The first replacement helicopter is already in operation, with another due to arrive at the end of the year.

Health NZ and ACC are working together with the sector to redesign the aeromedical operating model, including moving to longer-term contract arrangements with providers. The upgraded fleet is expected to be fully deployed soon, enhancing emergency medical services across New Zealand.
