Offshore wind developer BlueFloat Energy leaves Taranaki.
The New Zealand Government's recent decision to fast-track a seabed mining project in Taranaki has led offshore wind developer BlueFloat Energy to abandon its operations in the area. This move follows the rejection of the same project, Trans Tasman Resources, due to environmental concerns.
According to Labour energy and climate spokesperson Megan Woods, this decision is "a huge loss for Taranaki and our country" as it sends a message that offshore wind investment is not a priority. The industry was projected to create 12,000 jobs and contribute $50 billion in GDP.
The Government's handling of the consenting regime for wind projects has also been criticized by Woods, who claims that it has "dragged its heels" on stimulating offshore wind development. This decision is seen as contradictory to New Zealand's transition towards a clean energy economy.
The impact of this move will be far-reaching, with Woods stating that other offshore wind developers are being discouraged from investing in the country. The Government's priorities have been called into question, leaving concerns about the future of offshore wind development in New Zealand.
