Drought conditions worsening across Northland, Waikato, Horizons, and Marlborough-Tasman.
Agriculture Minister Todd McClay has classified drought conditions in four regions as a medium-scale adverse event, acknowledging the challenges faced by farmers due to below-average rainfall. The Government is providing $100,000 to rural support groups and encouraging farmers to seek advice from industry representatives, neighbours, or local Rural Support Trusts on 0800 787 254.
The classification unlocks further support for farmers, including tax relief, and allows the Ministry of Social Development to consider Rural Assistance Payments. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) will continue monitoring conditions as temperatures drop and growth slows. Rural Communities Minister Mark Paterson is urging farmers to reach out to their networks for help if needed.
