New measures unveiled to combat online scams and protect New Zealanders.
The New Zealand Government has committed to better coordination of anti-scam efforts, with Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Andrew Bayly taking on a lead role. The move comes as the country's financial losses to scammers have reached nearly $200 million in the past year, with estimates suggesting actual losses could be much higher due to underreporting.
According to Mr. Bayly, online scams are becoming increasingly complex, often originating offshore and requiring a more sophisticated approach to detection and prevention. To address this issue, the Government plans to coordinate work across ministerial portfolios and public sector agencies, collaborate with industry to develop sector-specific solutions, and engage with international counterparts in Australia and Singapore.
The three key components of Mr. Bayly's plan aim to improve information sharing, develop systemic solutions, and establish a coordinated regional approach. By enhancing coordination efforts and tapping into international expertise, the Government hopes to significantly improve its effectiveness in tackling online scams and prevent more New Zealanders from becoming victims.
